Neutrino Masses and Theories of New Physics
The Standard Model of Particle Physics stands as one of the most successful theories of nature. Following the discovery of the Brout–Englert–Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, we understand how massive gauge bosons and charged fermions acquire their masses. The Standard Model provides an exceptionally precise description of a wide range of experimental results involving the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions. However, it fails to account for the origin of neutrino masses. In this colloquium, I will review the main theoretical mechanisms proposed to generate neutrino masses. I will discuss the standard paradigm as well as alternative new theories predicting interesting connections between the origin of neutrino masses and dark matter. I will discuss the main theoretical predictions relevant for testing these ideas at collider and low-energy experiments.
