Abstract: Low-dimensional quantum materials exhibit strong Coulomb interactions and rich many-body physics, offering opportunities for electronics, optoelectronics, and quantum technologies. In two-dimensional semiconductors, these interactions produce tightly bound excitons and trions. I will discuss theoretical calculations of exciton and trion states and their optical signatures, including absorption, photoluminescence, and exciton-polariton spectra as functions of doping and temperature. I will also address exciton lifetimes through phonon-assisted Auger decay in doped two-dimensional materials. Beyond two dimensions, I will discuss second-harmonic generation in one-dimensional carbon nanotubes as a probe of nonlinear light–matter interactions. Finally, I will discuss defect-engineered hexagonal boron nitride as a platform for quantum materials research, with an emphasis on nonlinear optical fingerprints of defects and their potential for identifying and controlling emergent functionality.
