Students frequently request transfer credit for physics courses taken at other institutions, commonly for courses taken before they matriculated to CWRU. Many also request approval for courses they wish to take elsewhere in summer school or in Study Abroad programs. Current CWRU students should obtain approval IN ADVANCE before taking a course elsewhere; this policy is in place to protect YOU, so that you don’t mistakenly take a course that will not be accepted for transfer credit.
Students should contact their four-year advisor in the Undergraduate Advising Support Office to discuss their plans prior to taking courses off-campus and to obtain the Off-Campus Study Request Form they will need to complete in order to transfer the courses to CWRU. Ordinarily, the form is used for courses taken at institutions in the United States. Students seeking to take courses abroad should meet with an advisor in the Office of Education Abroad.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PRE-HEALTH STUDENTS (04/30/2015): Before seeking transfer credit for physics courses taken elsewhere, be aware of restrictions that some medical schools place on your studies. From Dean Scherger, health career advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Studies: ‘While the number of medical and other health science schools that accept online and community college courses continues to slowly increase, they still remain a minority among all programs. Since pre-health students typically apply to a range of 8-20 schools, and are thus likely to apply to schools that do not accept alternative classroom experiences, I recommend that the students take their core science courses at four year institutions in traditional classrooms. While many of the pre-health students receive this advice as they consult with me, I am certain there are a fair number who do not seek my perspective.’
There are several general policies that steer the physics department’s decision on whether to grant transfer credit. If you are seeking approval for a course not listed below, YOU need to provide DETAILED information about it. Ideally, you should obtain a syllabus that describes the textbook used and the topics covered. Simply sending along the name of the course is not sufficient since the same name, say MECHANICS, could apply to a high school, introductory college, advanced or even a graduate course. A General Bulletin-type description is occasionally sufficient, but not always.
It’s also important for you, in consultation with your CWRU academic advisor, to identify the correct CWRU physics course for which you need transfer credit. This is determined by your major department, not by the Department of Physics. It is, however, useful for you to inform the academic representative of physics of your major(s) or intended major(s) when you request transfer credit as this can minimize the possibility that you will take the wrong course.
IMPORTANT CAVEAT ABOUT THE APPROVAL PROCESS FOR PHYSICS TRANSFER CREDIT: Our department’s role in this process is limited to assessing whether the course a student wishes to take elsewhere is equivalent to a course we offer or might offer in the CWRU Department of Physics. There are many other school and university rules that might have an impact on a student’s ability to take a course elsewhere and transfer that credit to CWRU. The above warning for pre-health students is one example. Another example is the policy that (according to the CWRU Office of Undergraduate Studies) students may use no more that 15 credit-hours of domestic off-campus study towards their degrees. It is up to the student, with assistance from an academic advisor and/or Navigator, to make certain they don’t run afoul of these and other policies.
INTRODUCTORY COURSES such as PHYS 115, 116, 121 & 122
There are three major concerns for transfer credit for these courses. When you ask the physics department’s academic representative to sign the form allowing transfer credit, you must present evidence (hard copies of documents or URL’s of appropriate web sites) that the course you wish to take satisfies each of the following conditions.
1. MATH LEVEL:
PHYS 121/122 are calculus-based courses. Any substitute must also be calculus-based, not algebra-based. The information you provide to have a course approved must CLEARLY show that it is calculus-based. If this information simply lists a math course number as a prerequisite, you should provide material that shows this prerequisite is calculus.
PHYS 115/116 were once also calculus-based at CWRU but the physics department removed this requirement effective for the fall of 2003. Since students at Case do commonly take calculus before taking physics, the PHYS 115/116 instructor is free to introduce some calculus in our life science physics sequence, but we now use a text that is designed for life science students (algebra-based) and will accept algebra-based courses from other institutions. (Some universities still formally require calculus for their life science physics courses but many do not. A better way to distinguish a life science from a typical calculus-based sequence for engineers and BS science majors is to compare the topics covered.)
Faculty members in some CWRU departments that focus on pre-med students were not pleased about the switch from a calculus to an algebra-based pre-med sequence at CWRU. They thought this would put students at a disadvantage if those students later chose to pursue a career in medical research or switched to another major with more rigorous mathematics requirements. If this might be a concern for you, please consult your major advisor before proceeding to choose a physics course.
Ideally, a university will include in its General Bulletin information describing a course as either algebra- or calculus-based. If they do not do this, then you must find out through other means, such as
- Examine the prerequisites to see if calculus is required as a prerequisite. (A corequisite is not good enough since our PHYS 121 uses calculus starting the first week of classes.)
- Find out the name of the textbook, anything described as ‘College Physics’ is probably an algebra-based course, ‘University Physics’ is a buzzword for a calculus-based course, ‘General Physics’ is probably calculus-based but this is not guaranteed.
- Check for a course web page that the institution may have posted from the current or previous semesters.
- Contact the university and ask the question directly.
2. CONTENT & HOURS:
The courses must meet for roughly the same number of total hours and cover roughly the same material as do PHYS 115, 116, 121 and 122 (as described here) An exact content match is not necessary, an overlap of 80% or so is common. Modern physics, fluids and thermodynamics are commonly included in courses designed for life science students, like our PHYS 115/116, but are usually covered in separate courses in sequences for engineers, like our PHYS 121/122. Before asking for approval of transfer credit for our PHYS 122, be certain that the course you’ve identified does NOT devote a significant amount of time to quantum mechanics, nuclear and particle physics, and special relativity.
An approximate match of hours can be complicated for universities that operate on academic calendars based on quarters rather than semesters; this is fairly common on the west coast of the US. If the institution at which you plan to study physics operates on quarters, then most likely you will need to take three of their physics courses in order to obtain credit for two CWRU courses (or two courses to get credit for one). Some universities offer 5 credit physics courses on a quarter system but this translates into only 3.33 credits on a semester basis, rather than the 4 credits normally associated with intro physics courses at CWRU.
3. LAB:
PHYS 115, 116, 121 and 122 each include a laboratory component. These labs meet for 3 hours, 7 times a semester. Many universities include such a lab as part of their introductory physics courses while others list the labs separately, usually as a 1 credit course. Either system is acceptable as long as there is a lab that you will take. Some institutions regard physics plus lab as 5 credits but this will only transfer to CWRU as 4 credits. There are a few institutions which do not offer a lab for PHYS 121/122 or offer only a single semester of lab for this pair of courses. You cannot obtain transfer credit for any of PHYS 115, 116, 121, or 122 until you complete a laboratory associated with that course. Case does offer separate stand-alone labs, PHYS 113A and PHYS 113B, which can be used to satisfy the lab requirement for transfer credit lecture courses. Your transfer credit request will be signed by the academic representative of the Department of Physics but with a note that explains the credit should not be posted on SIS until you receive credit for the associated lab at CWRU. It will be up to YOU to notify the Office of Undergraduate Studies when your lab grade is posted; there is no automatic system in place to do this.
ONLINE COURSES
The physics department does not in general accept online courses for transfer credit, although individual requests for such credit might be considered by the department’s Undergraduate Program Committee. Students seeking transfer credit for online courses will have to provide a complete syllabus that describes the content and level of the course and will also need to explain how the online aspect works, including how lectures are delivered (live or pre-recorded and how tests are proctored to protect the integrity of the exam. If the CWRU course has a lab, the student will also have to explain how this requirement will be fulfilled. Item #3 above describes some options.
PANDEMIC EXCEPTIONS: (updated 11/12/2021): The Department of Physics accepted online courses for the summer of 2020 and 2021 since we were forced to offer online courses then. We returned to in-person teaching for the fall of 2021 and will only accept in-person courses for transfer credit during the 2021 – 2022 academic year. HOWEVER, due to challenges in planning six months ahead, we have decided to offer online versions of our introductory courses in summer 2022 and will therefore accept online courses for transfer credit that summer, too. Students will, however, still have to provide a syllabus and explain how the online aspect works. This is particularly important for the laboratory component of an introductory physics sequence. If the institution cannot provide students with something resembling a ‘real’ laboratory experience, including taking data at home, then the course is not truly suitable. You cannot understand physics if all you know is what you hear in lecture and read in a book; physics is about how things work in practice and that can only be experienced in a real (not a virtual) lab setting.
ADVANCED PHYSICS COURSES – 200 level and above
These courses vary a great deal from institution to institution. Students who wish to take an advanced physics course from another institution should obtain a course syllabus from that institution and arrange a meeting with the academic representative of the CWRU Dept. of Physics.

It is preferable, however, to first send an email with attachments or links for all the relevant information, preferably including a syllabus. I’ve posted a copy of my regular schedule on my office door, showing office hours (when I will try to be in my office) and other times when I might be available. If you have trouble catching me, just send an email listing a few times that fit your schedule and I’ll get back to you with a firm appointment at one of those times or, if none works, suggestions of alternate times. Rather than worry about an appointment, IF you’ve done all your homework and I’ve replied that I will approve the course, you can, if I’m not in, just leave your form at my office (slide it under the door or leave it on the neighboring bookshelf; in the latter case you should point me to it by leaving a post-it note on my door – there’s a supply of post-it notes handy) or mailbox (Rock. 225). I’ll sign your form, leave it on the bookshelf outside my office, and alert you that it is available for you to retrieve at your convenience.
APPROVED COURSES IN US INSTITUTIONS
The following courses have been approved for transfer credit as of the date shown. We can’t keep track of changes made by other institutions and won’t guarantee that the courses in the following table will continue indefinitely to serve as substitutes for our own courses or that they will be available at any given time.
If the approval date listed below is more than five years old, the course must be reexamined to determine if it is still acceptable for transfer credit.
Identifying satisfactory courses is easier in certain states which have adopted uniform standards across state-supported institutions. CWRU isn’t a state university, so you won’t find our courses in the database for Ohio or other states, but you can research courses already approved at select institutions in the table below. APPROVED INTRODUCTORY COURSES IN INSTITUTIONS OUTSIDE THE US
Before requesting approval for a physics course taken abroad, students MUST consult the Office of Education Abroad and the Office of Undergraduate Studies and obtain their approval. CHINA:
10/16/2017: Many students have requested transfer credit for PHYS 011 and PHYS 021 taken at Wuhan University over the summer. It has been difficult to evaluate these requests because Wuhan uses the same course number for very different versions of their introductory physics courses. Some syllabi supplied by students suggest the course is similar to our PHYS 121 or 122 but other syllabi for the same course number describe something that would be too basic for a high school AP physics course in the US. Also, some versions of PHYS 011 and 021 at Wuhan have the laboratory component we expect while others do not, and it is not possible to tell the difference based only on the course number. On 10/10/2017, Autumn Beechler informed us that the Office of Education Abroad has removed Wuhan University from the approved summer program list.
3/20/2019: PHYS 201, Electricity and Magnetism, at Zhejiang University is approved to transfer as our PHYS 122. It is, however, unclear whether the Zhejiang course covers Maxwell’s equations and related concepts in optics such as diffraction and interference. This does not preclude approving the course for transfer credit but students should be aware of this issue.
1/21/2020: VP390 Modern Physics in the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute is approved to transfer as our PHYS 221.
ENGLAND:
1/3/2019: The University of Sheffield’s year-long PHY009 Foundations of Physics was approved to transfer as our PHYS 115 and PHYS 116. The Sheffield course has co-requisite labs FCE002 and FCE003 that must also be taken for this transfer credit.
SCOTLAND:
3/27/2017: The University of Edinburgh Physics 1B: The Stuff of the Universe (PHYS08017) was approved to transfer as CWRU’s PHYS 221.
