Giant telescopes, exoplanets, and astronomy in the 2020s
The largest optical telescopes reached the 10-meter threshold in 1993 with the Keck observatory on Mauna Kea, then substantially stopped growing for 25 years. The 2020s are expected to show the next giant step, with three new 30-meter-class observatories opening at a cost of over $1B each. In this talk, I will overview some of the technologies that have made these telescopes possible, and also introduce WAET, my conceptual design for a ground-based telescope that might allow the telescopes of the 2020s and 2030s to be built bigger, faster, and cheaper.
