In the Department of Physics at Case Western Reserve University we know that the great scientific advances of each generation are achieved by pushing the limits of the unknown and the impossible, to discover and eventually harness what is newly possible. In this quest to understand, physics steadfastly refuses to draw boundaries around its subject matter.  It encompasses the smallest and largest scales, seeking the fundamental laws that govern subatomic processes and the whole universe, and the startling patterns and phenomena that emerge at every scale in between, from the organization and dynamics of life to the materials that make modern technology possible.
